DestinEarth Climate Adaptation Digital Twin
Destination Earth is a flagship initiative of the European Commission. It aims to develop an information system encompassing unprecedented levels of detail, quality and interactivity to support society and policymakers to respond better and adapt to the environmental challenges posed by climate change and extreme events.
Duration: September 2022 - June 2024
Our work in this project
Streaming climate data - During the project, a general state vector is created that connects the earth system models with the applications at an unprecedented scale. The information system describes the Earth system in a standardized manner based on physical terms.
Use case applications - The BSC will build two applications for an energy and urban use case. The target of the energy use case is to determine changes in wind resources in future climate conditions. The urban use case will focus on heat island-relevant temperature indicators.
User engagement - Storylines will be co-developed with the users to define relevant historical extreme events with sectoral impacts. When the storylines simulate the extreme events in a future climate, their impacts can be determined and adjusted to the local adaptation context.
Why is this work relevant?
Given that the global warming level gets closer to the thresholds set by the Paris Agreement, it becomes ever more pressing to understand how the global climate can affect regional climate change and extreme weather. The Climate Adaptation digital twin aims to improve climate information relevant to regional risk assessments and local decision-making. Therefore, it is vital to make climate data accessible, interoperable, and relatable to society.
