Our work in this project

Climate science - We provide climate variables and bioclimatic indicators tailored to users from the agriculture sector that can support several decision processes in their business. Indicators can be calculated for the crop of interest, including for instance the growing season temperature, the number of heat stress days or the total amount of spring rain.

User engagement - We participate in the co-development of the MED-GOLD dashboard together with stakeholders from the wine, olive oil and durum wheat sector, and develop different use cases to illustrate the application of past climate information and future predictions in these sectors.

Bringing knowledge to society - We create dissemination materials such as informational sheets, user guides, a glossary and other outreach material to support knowledge transfer from science to the agriculture communities and to enhance mutual understanding.

Why is this work relevant?

Climate change increases the severity of extreme events, such as droughts and heatwaves, and leads to issues such as reduced water availability, crop failure and higher risk of pest diseases. In the Mediterranean, the production of certain crops and corresponding food products is heavily affected by the weather and climate. Climate services developed in MED-GOLD, particularly predictions of climate variables and bioclimatic indicators, can support critical decisions in agriculture and help create more resilient, efficient and sustainable food systems.
