VitiGEOSS
VitiGEOSS is an H2020 project that provides winemakers with forecasts, in-field measurements and recommendations to help optimise vineyard management processes. The project develops a vineyard management solution integrating Earth observations and in-field sensor measurements in a single platform. It provides information relevant for viticulture, e.g. climate and phenology.
Duration: September 2020 - February 2024
Our work in this project
Weather and climate predictions - Our group develops weather and climate (sub-seasonal and seasonal) forecasts for variables such as temperature and precipitation, which are provided to users through the VitiGEOSS platform. These forecasts are also used as input for other services integrated in the platform, such as phenology. We are also involved in the co-design and visualisation of the products to ensure that they can be easily interpreted by users.
Communication - We coordinate communication and dissemination activities to ensure knowledge transfer of the project goals and results to the end users of the VitiGEOSS platform (particularly three major winemakers in Spain, Italy and Portugal) and other interested audiences. We also promote the wider use of Earth Observation and climate services among the agriculture sector, and the market uptake of the VitiGEOSS solutions.
Why is this work relevant?
The changing climate poses multiple challenges for the food and wine industry. Exploring sustainable production and management methods is crucial for mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting local economic growth. The VitiGEOSS project provides services that help improve agricultural operations at an economic, environmental and local level.
