CALIOPE is Spain's air quality forecast system developed by the BSC that integrates European, Spanish, Catalan and Barcelona domains. It produces an open, operational, and detailed forecast (24h and 48h) aimed at air pollution managers and any citizen interested in the quality of the air we breathe. Centered in the field of atmospheric composition, it provides quantitative and qualitative information about the primary pollutants regulated by the European Directive 2008/50/EC and the World Health Organization (WHO) through the CALIOPE webpage.

Our operational air quality forecasting system has been informing citizens and governments about air pollution for more than 10 years. CALIOPE is the primary reference for air quality information for the Catalan government and the authorities of the Barcelona metropolitan area. The government of México has also adopted it to predict air quality in México City and evaluate measures to reduce pollution levels. We have also collaborated with the private sector, e.g. providing air quality forecasts for the smart cities platform Vodafone Connected City

One of the applications of CALIOPE is assessing the potential impact of specific measures to see whether it is possible to make decisions about restricting traffic similar to those recently taken in different European cities. Some studies developed in-house provide valuable knowledge on the proper implementation of mobility management measures, technological improvements, use of alternative fuels and projections of emissions from different sectors to reduce the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants.
