BSC releases the new version of CALIOPE, the research air quality forecast service
- The new version of the air quality tool CALIOPE offers an enhanced user experience and user-friendly website.
- The platform offers forecasts for the Iberian Peninsula, Catalunya and, coming soon, the urban domain of Barcelona.
- The updated version of the tool is a collaborative work between three different groups of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
In a joint effort, the Earth System Services, Computational Earth Sciences and Atmospheric Composition groups of the Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) have just launched a new version of the state-of-the-art air quality tool CALIOPE. This updated version of CALIOPE represents a significant advancement over the previous release. While the previous iteration provided essential air quality data, the current version prioritises ease of use, delivering an enhanced and more accessible user experience.
With a renewed design, much fresher and more modern, and an approach focused on accessibility, the news website of CALIOPE offers an enhanced user experience with more comprehensive air quality information. The platform now features expanded forecasts covering the Iberian Peninsula and Catalunya.
One of the most anticipated additions is the inclusion of detailed urban-level forecasts for Barcelona, which will make the platform especially useful for residents and professionals operating in the city. This feature is expected to go live soon.
Moreover, useful resources for users have also been added, such as a user guide, a video tutorial, information on particulate pollutants and their regulation, or explanations of the Air quality index (AQI).
The new platform also includes an interactive application that explains, in a graphic way and adapted to all audiences, what the air we breathe is like and what it means when it is polluted. This app, entitled ‘What are we breathing?’, was designed and developed as the final project of the Master's Degree in Visual Tools for Citizen Empowerment (MVTEC) organized by the Fundació UdG and the ViT Foundation.
Users can expect ongoing improvements as the platform continues evolving, offering richer data and a more seamless experience for those seeking reliable weather information for the region.
Stay tuned!
