Building on the work of the global Lancet Countdown, the Lancet Countdown in Europe leverages the wealth of data and cross-disciplinary expertise in Europe, to develop region-specific indicators to support the response to climate change for health.

Coordination - The Countdown in Europe consortium was coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center- Centro Nacional de Supercomputacion (BSC), Prof. Rachel Lowe (Director) and Dr. Kim van Daalen (Research fellow/lead), since its inception up to September 2024. Multiple indicators that are part of the collaboration have also been generated by BSC authors.
Scientific publications and policy reports - The Lancet Countdown in Europe has published three major publications and some minor publications and contributed to several major policy reports in collaboration with the Europen Environment Agency (EEA), World Health Organization (WHO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Interactive visualisations - A bunch of interactive visualisations of a subset of indicators accessible were developed through the European Climate and Health Observatory.
Infographics - Infographics to highlight findings were developed in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Why is this work relevant?
Record-breaking temperatures were recorded across the globe in the past years. Without climate action, adverse climate-related health impacts are expected to worsen worldwide, affecting billions of people. Temperatures in Europe are warming at twice the rate of the global average, threatening the health of populations across the continent and leading to unnecessary loss of life. The Lancet Countdown in Europe was established in 2021, to assess the health profile of climate change aiming to stimulate European social and political will to implement rapid health-responsive climate mitigation and adaptation actions.
